How to Plan a Better Kitchen Layout

A great kitchen starts with a great layout. Here's how to choose one that fits your space and the way you cook.

Layout

The layout is the foundation of every kitchen. Before choosing cabinet colours or countertops, getting the arrangement right makes the biggest difference to how the room works day to day.

Start with how you cook

Do you cook alone or with others? Do you entertain often? Do children do homework at the counter? Your daily habits should shape the layout more than any trend.

Keep the work zones connected

The sink, cooktop and fridge should be close enough to move between easily, without anything blocking the path. A tidy work triangle makes cooking faster and safer.

Choose the right shape

Galley kitchens suit narrow spaces. L-shaped kitchens open up room for dining. Islands add prep space and seating in larger, open-plan rooms.

Plan storage where you need it

Store pots near the cooktop, dishes near the dishwasher and everyday food near the prep area. Deep drawers are often more useful than lower cupboards.

Think about light and safety

Place windows and task lighting over work areas, keep an extinguisher within easy reach and make sure smoke alarms are close by but not directly above the cooktop.
